最近、開発環境として Transmit などでも有名な Panic 社が提供している Coda というアプリケーションを使っています。テキストエディタに加えて、サーバ上のファイルを管理できたり、ターミナルも内蔵されてたりと機能も豊富なアプリケーションでインターフェースも美しく気に入っています。とくにテキストエディタがきれいで入力補完機能なども標準でついているのでなかなか秀逸です。
Panic Sans
で、そのテキストエディタの標準フォントとして Panic Sans というフォントが Coda をインストールするとついてきます。このフォントがまたきれいでいい感じなんです。有名なフォントなのかと調べてみると日本国内の情報は見当たらなかったんですが、海外では少し話題になったりはしているようです。
海外のとあるメーリングリストに「 Coda, Panic Sans Font 」というスレッドで Panic Sans について何やら議論された記録が残っています。全部は見ていないんですが要約すると、「 Coda に入ってる Panic Sans ってフォントがきれいだよ」「このフォント Bitstream Vera フォントに似てね？無断改変？」「いやいや、まさしくこれは Bitstream Vera だよ」「Coda のヘルプにちゃんと書いてあるよ」「ほんとだー」というようなやり取りっぽい。
確かに Coda のヘルプから著作権情報を見ると Bitstream Vera の Copyrights がちゃんと記載されています。どうやら Panic Sans は Bitstream Vera をベースにしているようです。
Bitstream Vera
この Bitstream Vera というフォントは何かというと、名称を変更すれば改変やフォントの追加などをして、自由に配布できるフリーなフォントらしい。日本国内では M+ と IPA フォントの合成フォントで利用されているようで、海外でもいろいろフォントが配布されているようです。
というわけで、Panic Sans なかなかきれいで気に入ってます。コードを書く人間としてはやはりフォントも気にしたいところです。
